Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
Lord make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not
so much to seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is the giving that we receive;
in the pardoning that we are pardoned;
And, it is in the dying that
we are born to eternal life.
This prayer was chosen for the Cal Poly memorial, not only because St. Francis was Frank’s namesake, but also because it was his favorite prayer. It was also chosen because it embodies the essence of who Frank was in his heart, spirit, and very being.
